Holly Michelle Eckert - Nonviolent Communication Training

Do your words invite pleasure?

January, 2009

I find great meaning in supporting dreams. Whether the dreams are my own or someone else's, there is something so purposeful about taking steps to bring those dreams to fruition.

When someone brings their dreams to me, I get so excited! My generosity and creativity are stimulated. Words like "Can you help me find some Nonviolent Communication practice group members in my area?" and "I want to compete in this year's juggling competition" activate me.

I feel enthusiastic when I read those-do you as well?

Contrast those with "This NVC class was basically a waste because there is no ongoing chance to practice" and "My juggling skills are not getting any better."

How do you feel when you read those words? I feel discouraged, a bit apathetic and also slightly panicked about what to do.

The difference? The first group builds on a dream. These are the words of inviting pleasure.

Sharing our hurts, frustrations and sorrows is an important bonding experience for the relationships we want to take to a deeper level. For casual conversation, however, the person listening to you will likely take your frustrations personally or feel awkward and helpless. Both these reactions result in separation instead of connection.

Connection is easily built on celebration. We humans have an innate desire to contribute to each other's happiness. Expressing what will please you will bring you infinitely greater results and a more connected and uplifted journey along the way.
